Globally, millions of older people will live their later years with severe visual impairment and blindness, often as a result of poor awareness, lack of preventative screening or services, and inaccessibility to adequate healthcare treatments and centers.  As population ageing progresses worldwide, increasing exponentially in developing countries, there is an immediate sense of urgency and a global responsibility to address this leading cause of disability among this segment of the population.

Civil Society organizations have a pivotal role to play to advocate, educate, and collaborate to ensure that vision impairment and blindness is no longer regarded as an inevitable condition of ageing.
